Linus Benedict Torvalds ( Helsinki , Finland , December 28, 1969 1 ) is a Finnish - American software engineer , 2 known for initiating and maintaining the development of the Linux kernel (in Spanish, nucleus ) , based on the free operating system Minix created by Andrew S. Tanenbaum and in some tools, various utilities, and compilers developed by the GNU project. He is currently responsible for the coordination of the project. He has also developed the Git version control software .
